We stopped along the roadside searching for house no. 820. To our left was a massive white building with gray doors and a cross slapped right in the middle. Thinking, this couldn’t be it, could it? This is a church the Uber driver uttered. To our surprise the building we had been looking for was the church. Yep, this certainly was it.
We were welcomed bY our host Sara, who was kind enough to give us her time. She shared with us that the property was previously an old 19th century church that herself and her partner Paul, had converted into a beautifully constructed home. I mean this space was ostentatiously designed and when Sara shared that she was previously the creative director of Condé Nast it tied it all together. I wouldn’t have expected less. It looked like it belonged in the pages of a Condé Nast publication.
EXPERIENCE
Sara and Paul both love collecting antiques that complements the the space. The space reminded me of something I think you would see in India. Rich in color and texture, giving the room a palatial feel. Walls are coated in shades of navy blue paint and adorned with gold framed images of old Hindi gurus. The floors were meticulously decorated with a Moorish stencil design, while leather ottoman dotted around complement the lavish surroundings.

The last time I had Ropa Vieja this good was in in Cuba. Being at Cane & Table made me nostalgic of my time in Cuba. It’s crazy how certain spaces can make you visually travel to a place without having to board a flight. I have been coming to New Orleans for years but had never stopped by this
restaurant before.
This space was previously a Russian themed restaurant that was stripped down and rebuilt by Alejandro and his partner. Alejandro the head chef has turned his family recipes into a business. The food here was to die for and very unique: Coconut flavored shrimp with rice and peas, fried potatoes chips, Gulf shrimp toast and black eyed pea fritters, just to name a few of the mouthwatering dishes.
To accompany our meal we ordered the ‘American Flyer’ - Cane & Table is known for its cocktail bar and its offerings are simply crafted. This was food and drink for the soul.
